Yesterday, in my interview at The Enchanted Home, I named Melissa Rufty as one of my design icons. And, it got me thinking. What is it that I love about her work?
Looking through her portfolio, I think it’s the layers. And the variation. I think it’s a bold, chic, relaxed look, but never the same. I love that.
I first saw Melissa’s work in a friend’s apartment in NYC, 5 years ago. Her son’s room was beyond adorable and she said her best friend from home had helped her. The best friend……was Melissa!
Wouldn’t you love to have a best friend like that?!
I love that her work has such a collected over time look which is created unique to each client. I think there is an element of sophistication and artfulness in her rooms that anyone would delight in coming home to.
Her style reminds me of yours. Love the pretties arranged and that she instills one to use antiques and the good silver.

I can so see why you are drawn to her work, Elizabeth! That first picture has been in my files for a while, just gorgeous! She has really mastered the use of colors, texture and prints….love the way she pulls them together…quite beautiful! Enjoy your day.
I agree with you! Her use of color is amazing! Take care, Caroline
I think that the best part about it is how well it all works together. It is definitely "done" but doesn't scream "decorator was here". Some really great style here.
I love that last bedroom. I've used that photo in a past post… now I know who the genius is behind it!! xo
agreed. I think my heart stopped a little when I first saw her work…
Elizabeth, thanks so much for including these photos. I wasn't familiar with Melissa, so wondered about her work when I read your interview. Gorgeous! I love the complexity and the juxtaposition of the old with the new. Lots of risk-taking, but it all pays off so beautifully! Love, love. Thanks for sharing! XO
And did you notice that there is pink in almost every photo?!!
xo Cathy
She is one of my favorites too, I have so many of her images in my inspiration files!
Gorgeous…and so very "you" as well, easy to see why you like her work so much!

Amazing. I went to school with Melissa and had no idea she has turned into a well known designer. I was best friend's with her sister-in-law growing up. Who knew?
Swooning over that first room!! I love the mix of traditional and modern/funky!

So glad to see your post on her. I love your blog, and know that if you were in Seattle you too would have been at my Mad Men bday party. 🙂 xo Dana
I love Melissa's work too. And I just adore that she uses so many banquettes – I've been trying to fit one in for years!!
You are so right it is the layers and it looks as if it has been collected over time, that is great design!! Kathysue
