Today, my son starts 1st grade. A little later than planned. But, sometimes life throws something your way and you have no choice but to catch it.
He’ll be wearing a ball cap to school for a few weeks, due to his accident, which is definitely NOT part of the dress code. In a show of solidarity, his fellow 1st graders have been invited to wear a cap tomorrow on his first day back.
What an amazing opportunity for young children to learn the gift of empathy and camaraderie.
As my son starts back to school, I think it’s time for me to return to blogging. I can not thank you each enough for the comments you’ve written and the prayers you’ve shared. I feel like you were there for me in solidarity and camaraderie and I’ll never forget it.
Today my son and I are off to climb our mountains. And, I’m thinking…..I’ll wear a ball cap, too!

Oh I'm all teary eyed reading this – how great of the the school to support him like this!! I think I'm going to wear a cap today too!!
I got chills reading this Elizabeth, what a beautiful gesture of the schools administration to suggest that everyone wear hats…a lovely story. Wishing him a wonderful and successful year I am sure he will get a big warm welcome. And to you, take a deep breath and enjoy this milestone of him going to school, well and healthy….that IS something big to celebrate. I am glad you are back and send a big hug to both you and your son.
So happy to hear your boy will be heading to school today and all goes well. What a sweet gesture that his classmates will be wearing hats, just like him!
Best,
Susan
I'm sure there are a number of boys who would relish the chance to support a buddy… and wear a baseball cap (especially since it's not part of the dress code!) Wishing your son a great school year!
xxoo
I love the idea of all of your son's little classmates wearing their hats today! Tipping mine to all of you!xx

What a wonderful school! So now my hat will be tribute to you and your son instead of gym hair!! I'm thrilled that your back and your strong boy is returning to school! Make sure to get some recovery time for yourself while he's at school.

I love that they are all wearing caps. How sweet and something your son will remember for awhile.
Glad he's on the mend, welcome back to the blogging world.
I'm so glad he is on the mend! I hope he continues to heal, and I hope the kids in his class keep being kind and supportive. Hope his first day is WONDERFUL!!
Elizabeth – I am so happy for you and your son. I tried commenting back when you first shared the news, but I couldn't get it to take! Anyway, I too have a first grader, and all this hits so close to home. Those little sweeties are still so fragile, even though they have moments of seeming so grown up. I wish your son a GREAT re-entry into school, and love that his fellow 1st graders get to wear caps in his honor. How special. Sending you all a huge cross-country hug! Dana
Hi Elizabeth, What wonderful news he is going to school tomorrow! I am so glad he is doing okay. I think all bloggers have caps on for you both!
Yay! Great news and welcome back – we missed you! xx
Congratulations. What wonderful news. I am so happy for you that your son is well enough to go back to school, and what a wonderful school it must be to offer him such a gesture of compassion and fellowship. I hope he has the best year ever. I know you will.
Best…Victoria
I just got all teary. What an amazing moment to have all the kids in caps. I hope it went well. xoxo
My hat is off to you and your little man. How wonderful that he is back to school and that they are so supportive of him at this sensitive time. Hurray for the school he attends! I'm impressed by you too Mrs. Pretty Pink Tulips, you had to be strong and keep focused to have this step you had today. You are the best!
I'm so glad that he's feeling well and heading back to school. How nice of everyone to join him and where a cap!
I saw your letter (and nice mention of your blog!) in the new Traditional Home magazine which arrived today – Congrats!
I love that the school is doing this. Imagine how supported and cared for he is going to feel… very special. xo
Wearing my cap for you and your son. Honored to have shared this moment with you and your family. Xoxxo
Thank goodness you are getting back to a regular schedule! Although it was a rough go, and not the way you would've liked your son to start 1st grade, better in a ball cap than a body cast! There's good to be found in every situation… things can always be worse! A ball cap indeed… so happy to hear!
XOXO
Jan
I hope he enjoyed his first day of school. I love how the class welcomed him wearing caps too. xo
I'm so glad to hear that your son is doing well. Maybe I missed it, but what type of accident did he have? Was it a car accident ?
What a sweet, wonderful school! I'm so thankful your little guy is on the mend … and I hope all of his friends enjoy sporting a cap at school!!
Elizabeth,
How adorable that his fellow classmates are showing their support!
And so happy for you that your little man is going off to first grade, even if it is a little later than planned.
Hurray!
Amy
