As a child, one of my all time favorite things was climbing a tree or curling up in a cozy spot with a really, really good book. It was an escape to another world, where I could become acquainted with characters that were unlike anyone I had actually ever met. Nancy Drew. Mysteries, in general. Anything by Judy Blume. Biographies.
Today, I love a good thriller or historical fiction. Lately, I seem to have been spending a lot of time in Paris, circa 1940s and am currently working through Seattle, circa 1930s. Next on my rotation is a mystery set on a cruise ship and a book about friendship set in contemporary NYC.
In other words…a little bit of this and a little bit of that.
Discovering a great new book is a small thrill and many come via recommendations from friends. So, I was a little skeptical, but definitely curious when I heard about Book of the Month Club. If the idea seems like something from a different era…it is!
Book of the Month Club, was founded in 1926 by Harry Scherman in NYC.
“Is there anything more satisfying than to keep abreast of the best new books of our time as they appear? In reading them, in enjoying them, in talking with others about them, we feel our day taking shape.” ~ founding statement, 1926
Today, the concept is updated for modern times. The editorial team and judges pour through hundreds of books and after much discussion and exchange of opionions, offer up their favorite five. These final choices are offered to club members and are accompanied by short write ups by a judge, giving you an informed opinion upon which to make a selection. And, if you are torn and want more than one book, you can add on. Books ship early in the month and the process is repeated, unless you want to skip a month.
My selection for August recently arrived, along with a darling book tote and wine koozie (they’ve been known to sneak fun little extras in your box). I can not wait to dive into this novel and find out who in the world is the woman in Cabin 10 and why in the world it matters!! If you’re looking for a fun way to read more books, check out BOTM club…and be sure to share any great recommendations. I’m always on the hunt for the next great book!
