This year (painted beautifully by my dear friend, Jeanne McKay Hartmann), I am aiming to read, listen and watch some new things that will entertain and inform me. I thought I’d share my selections each month, in case you’re looking for some ideas.
I’ve just finished reading An Anonymous Girl, by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, the co-authors of last year’s runaway thriller, The Wife Between Us. If you like mysteries and thrillers, here’s a list of 36 others from Goodreads you might want to look at.
I’m almost finished listening to Michelle Obama read her autobiography, Becoming, via Audible and I have to say it is quite good. Whatever side of the political aisle you prefer, this book is about so much more. Each of us brings our unique perspective to things, based on our upbringing, opportunities (or lack of), age, geography and family background. Listening to Michelle tell her story has helped me understand her perspective and appreciate her choices in a new way. I highly recommend listening to this because you literally hear the intonations and expression behind the words.
Finally, I adore watching The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel! Rachel Brosnahan (niece of Kate Brosnahan Spade) plays a 1950s housewife who discovers her gift for comedy after her husband leaves her for his secretary. I know it doesn’t sound funny…but it is! The entire cast is excellent and it’s worth watching for the drool-worthy wardrobe Mrs. Maisel and her mother, Rose, wear.
What are you reading, listening to and watching? I need to line things up for February!
Thanks, Elizabeth, for the recommendations. I also enjoyed Becoming.
If you haven’t watched Doctor Foster on Netflix I highly recommend it. The acting is amazing and The storyline is compelling so i have to admIt to binge watching the episodes.
I am right there with you regarding The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel!! It is so smartly written and incredibly funny. It is also so incredibly empowering to see a young single woman in the day following her dream with unabashed enthusiasm and confidence. And she is DANG funny!! Plus the set and costume design is utterly thrilling and drool worthy. Such a visual delight as well as a (almost) spiritual delight.
