Derby Day Decor

I’m still recovering from the excitement of last weekend’s big event, yet we’ve entered a new month and one of the biggest events of May happens this Saturday. The 137th Kentucky Derby!!!

Recently, I was asked to decorate a table for a local school fundraiser…the theme was Around the World. Since many of the more exotic locales had been taken, I stayed closer to home and went with the Kentucky Derby, as it is informally known as the Run for the Roses.

We were required to stay with certain elements and a black and white tablecloth, so I chose a wide black and white stripe which made me think of a jockey’s jersey.

I incorporated hot pink roses (the original roses of the 1st Kentucky Derby were pink and white, not red) and included a nod toward pretty pink tulips. The centerpiece was created in a silver trophy urn and surrounded by smaller arrangements in mint julep cups.

At the end of the evening, guests took home a book about the Kentucky Derby all tied up with ribbon and a pink rose.
So, be sure and watch this Saturday as the horses make their way around the track. Will it be Uncle Mo, Pants of Fire or Mucho Macho Man?
